- 1). Clean the area surrounding the pool. Sweep up and remove any loose debris or dirt that could possibly enter the pool while you are working. Use a skimmer net to fish out any leaves or debris floating in the water. Brush and vacuum the pool, and remove and empty the skimmer baskets (located in the filters).
- 2). Disconnect the hose that reaches from the filter to the pool and open all plugs inside the filter. This will allow the water to drain from the filter. Disconnect the line to the heater to remove all water from the heater.
- 3). Attach a garden hose to a submersible water pump. Lower the submersible pump into the water, allowing it to settle on the bottom of the pool. Place one of the ends of the garden house outside of the pool into a drain that connects to a sewer. Allow the water to drain from the pool until it reaches a level of six inches below the jets. Remove the submersible water pump from the pool. Shut off the pool filter.
- 4). Use an air compressor to blow out any remaining water in the lines connecting the filter to the pool. You may also use a leaf blower, with a rubber hose attached to the end, to blow out the water from the lines. Reach the end of the rubber hose into the holes where the filters connect to the pool and blow the water out. The water -- if any -- should drain back into the pool.
- 5). Plug the jets by fitting plastic plugs into each of the holes. Plug the holes connecting the pool to the filter with plastic plugs.
- 6). Stretch out plastic cover across the length and width of the pool. Set weights along the edges of the plastic cover to hold it in place.
