Carcinoma is a slow-growing skin cancer that occurs in the epithelial or top layer of skin.
Several treatment exist for its lesions; e.
g.
excision, liquid-nitrogen freezing, and scraping-and-burning, all of which leave scars.
Yet, the pre-cancerous carcinomas and similar skin damages on the face and neck require special treatments to prevent any scars.
The best way to prevent the more dangerous non-healing lesions from occurring is through a peel of the damaged skin.
This damage shows up as extra dry or scaly spots on the skin surface.
Treatment A 5-Fluorouracil cream (Efudex acronym) is applied twice daily for about two weeks until a simulated sunburn and red rash occurs.
After that, the surface skin slowly peels off, leaving a new layer of skin which can be protected by staying out of the sun, and by wearing wide-brim protective hats.
Here are 10 tips for doing this procedure successfully.
Tips
People who have damaged skin from too much past sun exposure can find suitable treatments through licensed dermatologists.
These treatments might vary for different parts of the body.
But for the face and neck areas, the chemically induced sunburn and peel offers both a protection and cure from further damage by carcinoma and other lesions.

Tips
- Choose a three-week period when you have no important engagements.
You won't want to be in public once the burn takes effect. - Apply small dabs of the cream to the portions of your face or neck needing the treatment.
Then rub these dabs into that skin.
Repeat this step until your face and neck are treated as needed.
Do this twice daily, usually in the morning and evening.
Wash your fingers carefully after each application. - Don't let the cream touch your eyelids or lips.
- Do not use face lotions, perfumes, or cleaning creams during this treatment.
- Stop applying the Efudex cream when the irritation gets so bad you can no longer touch your skin, usually in two weeks give or take a day or two.
- Let the peel happen naturally by itself.
It takes a week or more.
Do not pick at it with your fingers. - If any itch or sting occurs during this time, press the flat of your fingers against it for a while instead of scratching it with your finger nails.
- Add a large cloth over your pillow in bed.
Much of your peel will happen at night.
It also happens around your bathroom sink. - at night, double your pillow up under the back part of your head to minimize sleep loss.
- Once the peel is done, resume normal activities.
But give your new skin a month to toughen up.
Normally, you won't need to do the peel again for several years.
