- 1). Turn off any water in the sink and the dishwasher. You don't want to add more liquid to the clog as it can dilute the drain-cleaning solution.
- 2). Purchase commercial-grade drain-cleaning gel. Master Plumber Tim Carter recommends Drano. The gel is preferable for the garbage disposal since it is thicker and will not be as diluted as the regular product. The commercial-grade is available at most hardware stores and will add to the probability that you will not need to perform the unclogging twice.
- 3). Add the drain cleaner to the sink. Unscrew the cleaner, being very careful not to spill any. If a spill occurs, clean up immediately. Slowly poor correct amount (see side of bottle for specific amount) of product into the drain.
- 4). Allow the cleaner to sit in the sink for 30 minutes. Leaving the cleaning solution in longer allows the chemicals to work at the clog longer.
- 5). Flush the clog with hot water. Turn on the faucet as hot as possible, being careful to avoid your hands in the water. Let the water rinse the clog away.
