More TV channels are popping up, giving us a variety of shows to enjoy. While some of them you can watch as family entertainment, others with hot scenes, aggression, and crude language are preferably refrained due to the immaturity of the viewer, whom may just imitate what they see. Because it is difficult to monitor your children all the time to ensure they do not watch shows unsuitable for them, the television industry has created a TV content rating system. Here are the different types of TV content ratings that are available to help distinguish suitable show for children.
The most viewer-friendly rating would be TV-Y (Young) which means the program is suitable for anyone, including young children. In fact, children between 2 and 6 can comfortably watch these programs which are like live action or animated, without any aggression, gore, or adult content.
The next category would be TV-Y7 (Young from aged 7), which are designed for young children of age 7 and above. As children around this age can differentiate between make believe and reality, there may be some mild fantasy or comedic violence, which may be frightening for children younger than age 7. TV-Y7-FV (Young from aged 7 with Fantasy Violence), on the other hand, is more intense and combative than the TV-Y7 category.
TV-G (General) would be the general viewing programs that are suitable for all ages. These are not programs that were designed specifically for children, but the content is mild enough for parents to allow their children to watch the shows without their presence. The programs on TV-G may have very little or no violence, and does not use strong languages nor have sexual dialogue and scenes.
One category above that would be TV-PG (Parental Guidance), which programs would carry contents that are not suitable for younger children, or will need the guidance of a parent to explain things with the children. Such contents may include one or more of the listed: evocative communication, infrequent improper language, some sexual scenes, or moderate aggression.
The last category of which children may watch is TV-14, which programs parents would find unsuitable for children below age 14. Children below that age should not be left to watch the show unattended as it may contain one or more of the listed: intensely evocative communication, strong crude language, intense sexual scenes, or intense aggression.
Last but not least would be TV-MA (Matured Audience), which has hot scenes and crude languages that are not suitable for the eyes of children below the age of 17. Programs in this category may have one or more of the listed: indecent communication, explicit sexual activity, or graphic violence.
