- One of the duties of an associate pastor in the Presbyterian church include member counseling. Associate pastors perform general counseling or specialize in one area like marriage or new-member concerns. Scripture helps members deal with various personal issues. Couples in marriage counseling learn about religious views on gender roles within the union. New-member counseling helps people who recently joined the church gain insight on the faith.
- Several church ministries nurture members through small groups within the church. Youth and college or career ministries are examples of groups often led by associate pastors. Age-appropriate activities and group trips allow members to socialize while learning inspirational and life lessons. Ministries typically work to help the poor and spread religious doctrine.
- Associate pastors lead Sunday church services as needed and implement church policies within the congregation. Visits to the sick and shut-ins are included in the associate pastor's duties. These ministers also attend -- and actively participate in -- weekly staff meetings and formulate local, national and international church mission goals. Congregational outings like skiing and religious retreats are traditionally organized by associate pastors.
- Associate pastors recruit and train Sunday school teachers and ministry volunteers. Their training is designed to help participants experience religious growth while using natural talents to benefit church programs. Program leaders learn to combine worship, ministry and volunteerism within their ministry programs. Smaller ministries work together to achieve unity within the larger church body.
