- Dog warts can be contagious or not, depending on the cause. If you notice that they are spreading to other locations, then they are more than likely the result of a virus and can be contagious to other animals. You should consult your vet for treatment of the animal. Some times a topical treatment can be applied to reduce them or the vet might suggest that they will go away once the virus has run its course.
- If the warts cannot be treated topically, they must be removed. One way is to surgically remove the warts. This will require the vet to use anesthesia to put your dog under during the procedure. It is just as risky to pets as it is to humans, and should only be done if it is a necessity.
- If the warts are small and the dog can be kept relatively still, then it is possible to freeze the warts off cryogenically. This keeps your dog from having to be subjected to anesthesia and is a safer alternative. The doctor will use a liquid nitrogen to freeze the warts and then remove them with little or no pain to the animal.
