If you have a new puppy and he is starting bite or nip at you, you need to move quickly to stop this behavior.
The earlier you begin to address this problem the quicker you will see positive results.
For very young puppies, nipping is a natural process to go through, especially when they are teething.
The way to stop puppies nipping at your hands and feet need not be an abusive response of hitting the puppy on your part.
This could lead to bigger problems later on and it could make the puppy frightened of you.
Never strike your puppy on the face.
This is never a solution to nipping.
One process to stop puppies nipping, especially if you catch the problem early on, is to transfer the nipping to a chew toy or bone instead of your flesh.
Another method to stop the nipping is to make believe that the puppy is hurting you when he nips you.
You could cry out with "Ouch!" or an "Arrr!" at the time you get nipped.
This method copies the natural behavior of the dog pack where dogs and puppies are playing with each other by nipping and biting.
They only know that the biting is too hard when the puppy or dog bitten lets out a yelp.
If your puppy is causing some serious problems with nipping one method to use is to put your thumb inside the pups mouth under the tongue and your other finger under the chin.
Hold this position for about 10 seconds.
This will cause discomfort to your pup and it will not be able to bite you.
Another method to stop puppies nipping in severe cases is to put on a pair of gloves that have a terrible tasting substance on them.
The puppy will then begin to associate nipping with a strong negative association.
Again in severe nipping cases, this time for older puppies (around 6 months), you can use a pinch or choke collar.
Whenever the pup nips, give the lead a short sharp tug.
This will again produce a strong negative association and the nipping should cease in short order.
