- 1). Remove any bulky pants or shorts you may be wearing. Actual jean sizes are usually one size larger than what the tape measure reads, but you should measure your body as true to fit as possible.
- 2). Circle the measuring tape loosely around your waistline below your bellybutton to calculate your waist size. For low-low rise jeans, you may want to measure a couple inches lower or add a couple of inches to your natural waistline.
- 3). Measure your hips by circling the tape around the widest area between the hips and the upper thigh area. Wrap loosely. It's better to have jeans a little looser than too tight.
- 4). Measure your inseam from the underside of the crotch to ankle. You can adjust your hemline by tacking on or subtracting a few inches, depending on your length preference. If you are unable to measure your own inseam, ask a friend or measure a pair of fitted pants you already own. To do so, lay your pants flat on a table and measure from the crotch to the ankle.
- 5). Consult a denim brand's sizing chart to figure out which jean size your measurements correlate to. U.S. jean sizes are typically numbered from 0 to 18, but you can order foreign sizes by using conversion charts, which are available online. Always check out sizing chart before you buy, as not all brands use standard sizing.
