Learn to Dance the Rumba!

If you have been considering learning how to dance the beautiful ballroom styles, but are afraid of all of the fast steps, the Rumba may be just the dance style for you! This style of ballroom dance is slower than many others, and is extremely sensual, sometimes being called "the dance of love".
The word Rumba is from the word "rumbear", which means to party and have a great time! The Rumba has its origins in late 19th century Havana.
Because of its sensual and sexual nature, the Rumba was often discouraged, and at one point, was even prohibited in the US.
The music of the Rumba is sensual, with percussion instruments providing a strong beat.
This music has Cuban and African influences.
When you learn how to Rumba, you will also be learning the basic movements for a number of other Latin dance styles.
By practicing these movements in the slower Rumba style (usually about 120 beats per minute), you will be prepared for the quicker tempos involved in other dance styles, such as Salsa.
Music for the Rumba is always in four/four time, and you may be surprised at the different styles of music that you can dance the Rumba to.
In fact, you can dance the Rumba to just about any song that is in this measure, whether it is a slow, medium or fast tempo.
If you are interested in learning how to do the Rumba, you have a number of options.
There are thousands of dance studios all across North America, so you are sure to find one in your area that offers ballroom dancing lessons.
You may also find classes and workshops at local community centers, YM/YWCA's and other locations.
Dance classes are a really great way to meet new people, but if you are really self-conscious about your dance skills, you can take some introductory Rumba lessons online.
There are all kinds of websites out there that offer ballroom dancing lessons.
Or, you can purchase any number of instructional DVD's.
Just remember, if you're not taking actual lessons from a real dance instructor, you are not getting the full benefit, and you may still want to take some classes later on.
By the say...
as a final note...
ladies, this dance is for you! When you dance the Rumba, your partner works to show you off, so you are always the center of attention!
