- 1). Clear off the wood surface of anything that might be sitting on it. Soak a paper towel with water, wring out the excess and use it to wipe the surface clean. Dry it with a clean, dry paper towel.
- 2). Prepare the buffing device. If you're using a machine designed specifically for buffing surfaces, make sure that the pad is clean and properly installed. If you're using a radial sander, attach a buffing pad attachment. Familiarize yourself with the machine you're using by thoroughly reading the instruction manual for your specific model. If you will need an extension cord to reach the wood surface, plug it in before proceeding.
- 3). Use a soft cloth to apply a liberal coat of furniture wax to the entire area you want to buff to a shine. Use the cloth to spread the wax around until the surface is coated evenly.
- 4). Plug in and turn on the buffing device. Hold it firmly and steadily with both hands and slowly lower the spinning buffer pad onto the waxed surface. Work your way across the entire surface, spending at least 10 seconds in any given place.
- 5). Look over the parts you've already buffed as you near the last un-buffed parts of the surface. If you see any spots that you missed, go back and touch them up at the end. When you're finished buffing, the surface should have a glimmering, reflective shine.
