- 1). Choose a spot for your tree that gets plenty of sunlight if your pawpaw tree is older than two years old. Provide shade if the tree is two years old or younger, since young shoots are sensitive to sunlight.
- 2). Select a spot with soil that is well-drained and and slightly acid (pH 5.5 to 7.0). Protect your pawpaw tree from the wind also by selecting a spot that is sheltered.
- 3). Transplant your pawpaw seedlings in the spring, when the tree begins new growth. Buy a younger tree, since the roots of an older pawpaw are delicate and make transplanting more difficult.
- 4). Keep the tree well-watered for the first year after you plant it. Do not allow the soil to become waterlogged or the tree will likely die.
- 5). Plant at least two trees for fruit production, since pawpaw trees must cross-pollinate.
