Insomnia Causes Checklist and Tips

How many insomnia causes are there? There isn't one specific cause of insomnia - it could be caused by any number of reasons, each depending on the person and the circumstances.
There are many different insomnia causes so you need to try and pinpoint what your cause of insomnia is in order to best cure it.
How can I work out my insomnia cause? For many people insomnia is a huge problem and it effects their daily lives therefore it may be very important to them to pinpoint their specific insomnia causes.
If you are an insomniac, you need to consider the following questions: Are you under a lot of stress? This can make it difficult to get to sleep and you may need to work on de-stressing techniques.
Are you depressed? Do you feel emotionally flat or hopeless? Depression has been known to cause insomnia.
Do you struggle with very strong feelings of fear, anxiety or worry? The brain may be too overtaken with worry and fear to be able to sleep.
Have you recently gone through a traumatic experience? Trauma can make it difficult to sleep as the brain will keep reliving the experience when you need to sleep.
Fear of nightmares may also keep a person awake.
Are you taking any medications that might be affecting your sleep? Some medications do have side effects and a common side effect is an inability to sleep.
Do you have any health problems that may be interfering with sleep? For example sleep apnea or rapid leg movement Is your sleep environment quiet and comfortable? You may be having issues with sleeping if you are disrupted by noises or by discomfort.
Are you spending enough time in sunlight during the day and in darkness at night? Your body may become confused if you are inside in the dark a lot during the day or attempt to sleep in a very light room.
Do you try to go to bed and get up around the same time every day? The body will become confused if you do not have a routine.
What can be done about my cause of insomnia? Many of the problems that are common insomnia causes can easily be cured.
If you are under a lot of stress you could try relaxation techniques.
Avoid caffeine and limit alcohol (none is ideal) Don't eat before sleeping If you are depressed it may be a good idea to see your doctor and discuss the possibility of antidepressants or counselling.
Counselling may also be extremely helpful for those who have had traumatic experiences.
Make sure your bedroom is quiet and your bed is comfortable.
Make sure you spend lots of time in light during the day and at night your room is dark.
Go to sleep at the same time and get up at the same time each day.
