Having an issue with the DVD drive in an XBOX is one of the more common problems you can come across.Of all the potential issues, trouble playing a disk or an "Open tray error are the most common. Luckily they can be one of the easiest to fix as well.
Having trouble reading a game DVD or CD usually means that the DVD rom lens needs cleaning.
The fans that keep the XBOX clean blow out hot air, but this also means cooler air is been drawn in elsewhere. This carries dust and grime into your XBOX, which will build up over time. An open dvd drawer is a great route in for both fresh air and dirt. If you or your friends smoke while playing the XBOX this will add to the problem as well. Dust on the DVD rom lens will stop it reading the disks properly.
Cigarette smoke will leave a sticky film on the lens that doubles the problem as dust will stick to it more readily.
A store bought DVD cleaner will fix these issues most of the time. Simply insert the DVD and follow the instructions on the screen. Ten minutes later you can be back playing your favorite game.
If the store DVD cleaner does not do a good enough job then you will have to clean the lens your self.
You will need to remove the top cover of the XBOX. This will give you full access the dvd drive. Once you disconnect the power and sata cables from the dvd drive you are safe to remove it. Turn the drive over and you will see between 4 and 6 screws that hold the DVD case together. Remove these to allow you to separate the two halves of the dvd casing.
You should be able to see the lens now.
Best way to clean it is with a Q tip ( buy the quality ones as the cheaper ones tend to leave cotton strands behind on the very part your are trying to clean). Dip the Q tip in Isopropyl Alcohol also known as rubbing alcohol. Gently wipe the lens. Once you are happy it is clean use a dry q tip to clean any film that the alcohol may have left behind.
Carefully reassemble the dvd case and reinstall in your console. Hopefully this through clean will have fixed the read issues.
