If one aspect of Madhur Bhandarkar that presents himself as a distinguished and maverick film maker, that is the choice of hard hitting subject matter, based on naked realities of life. Denying the conventional theory of film making, he goes beyond and his deep sense quests for something that is untold or the inside story of something. Right from the beginning , whatever he has made upto now, he has given it all he can whether it is Page3, Traffic Signal, Fashion or that of the Jail; the recently released.
It is a million dollar question for most of the individuals, who do not often get a chance to interact with prisoners, or the people who have made friendship with bars, that ‘what happens inside the strong walls' or ‘how is the real life in that hell; ‘what kind of individuals do we find and do they really plan for their visit to this place'.
The central jail opens with the arrival of an innocent victim Parag Dixit who doesn't have any idea of this hell but the u turn in his life changes the momentum from a sincere manager to jail in fraction of seconds. He follows the regular routine of jail such as remand, court, layers, next hearing, inside rustic friendship in a relatively new but different world and the long waiting which never finishes but finally his despair turns to hope because of a sincere and efficient layer though. His life in jail starts with anguish, anger, frustration and humiliation but the little ray of hope finally gets the victim through.
The specialty of this movie is its choice of characters. It seems as if each has been taken from real life and Madhur knows them from close. Apart from the protagonist himself, there is a principled convict who had killed his brother, Cricket bookie, drug dealers, a seemingly helpful don, notorious cops, a sincere lover and a disgruntled inspector along with two contrasting female characters; one a steady girlfriend and other being disgusted with the realities and getting married to another.
The movie is more than just a story of an innocent victim; fighting for justice for the crime he has not committed. It focuses on how jail takes all the new arrivals to its lap easily. It helps you to get yourself adjusted to the situation, no matter whether you are a real, deserving candidate or only a part of the game, played by chance and co incidence, it just swallows you. Being a teacher it teaches you all the alphabet of a certain language. If you are not controlled then you will be a master of the art; a real professional. Every time we expect the protagonist getting slipped out but some unknown power blocks him away
The most important aspect of the movie is the game, played in the court. The entire system works in such a way that the only thing you can do, is to wait and watch. If you run out of money then the game is over and you are finished. To get you out of the hell, you must satisfy the so called layers but subject to condition ‘no guarantee and no final date'
However it is a must watch not because it is a good movie based on the realities of life but can be your turn the next day and better to gain some knowledge before you face the magic.
