How to Set Up a Martin Birdhouse

    • 1). Select a location for the martin house that's at least 30 feet away from trees, houses or other structures. This ensures that predators such as raccoons and squirrels can't jump to the house and raid nests. Choose the middle of the largest available open area.

    • 2). Dig a hole at the selected location with a posthole digger. Make the hole approximately 3 feet deep to provide stability. Dig the hole wide enough to allow for several inches of clearance on either side of the pole.

    • 3). Set the pole in place in the hole and check that it is vertical with a level. Stake the pole securely into position. Mix enough concrete to fill the hole and follow the directions provided with the concrete to ensure that it cures properly.

    • 4). Use the hardware included with the martin house to attach it to the pole. Do not attach guy wires to the house; they could enable predators to reach the nests.

    • 5). Attach a predator baffle to the pole to prevent nest predators from raiding nests or harassing birds.
