- 1). Write down the measurements of the finished sham. Note the overall width, length and width of the flange portion of the sham. It is the corners of the flange portion that will be mitered.
- 2). Cut the fabric for the sham front to the finished width and length of the sham plus 1-1/2 inches. For example, if the sham is to be finished to 25 inches square, cut the fabric 26-1/2 inches square.
- 3). Measure then cut two pieces of the fabric for the fold-over back to the same size as the finished measurements of the sham plus 1 inch.
- 4). Cut the center block of the front of the sham to the size of the finished sham less twice the flange measurement plus 1 inch. For example, on a 25-inch sham with a flange of 3 inches, 25 minus 6 is 19, plus 1 for a total of 20. Cut the center block 20 inches square.
- 5). Turn each edge of the center block under 1/2-inch toward the wrong side and press them in place.
- 6). Fold the sham front in half diagonally, right sides together, then press on the fold. Stitch 1/8-inch from the fold. Fold the square in half, diagonally, right sides together from the remaining corner to corner, then press on the fold and stitch.
- 7). Place the sham front, wrong side to the table, on the work surface and press it in place.
- 8). Position the center block in the center of the sham front and pin it in place.
- 9). Fold one edge of each of the sham back pieces over toward the wrong side 1/2-inch and press it in place. Fold it again another 7-1/2 inches and press it in place. Lay one back piece on the worktable, right side to the table with the folded edge to the left. Place the other back piece on the worktable, right side to the table and the folded edge to the right, overlapping the other back piece. Adjust the two pieces until together they measure 26 1/2-by-26 1/2 inches. Pin them together through all of the layers of the fold-over.

Position the back and front sham pieces, right sides together, to match the outside edges and stitch them all around the perimeter with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the sham to the right side and press the edges in place. Pin the front and back sham pieces together through both layers and around the edges of the center block. Stitch through all layers as close to the edge of the center block as possible.
