- 1). Mix together water and liquid soap. Wash the stone with this solution, scrubbing away stubborn dirt with a metal-bristled brush. Rinse the stone completely with a garden hose and let it dry 24 to 48 hours.
- 2). Decide on a design for the stone, if desired. You can make each stone look like a flower or an insect or cover all of the stones with one large mural. Outline your design with chalk in a color that shows up clearly.
- 3). Paint your design or paint all of the stones using exterior masonry paint. You can use acrylic paint for small details, but you may have to recolor these areas several times a year. Let the paint dry 8 to 12 hours.
- 4). Apply masonry sealer evenly over all of the stone with a paintbrush or roller. The sealer will dry clear and protect both your art and the stones themselves. Reseal the stones every one to two years.
