Comprehensive Planning is at the Root of a Successful Home Refurbishment

If you're seriously considering a complete home refurbishment and a major renovation you must make sure that your planning is comprehensive and complete. Whilst there are always those "little things" that will crop up during a significant project such as this, comprehensive upfront planning will help you to ensure that you don't come up against any nasty, foreseeable issues that could throw you off the rails. Because there may be a fairly sizable investment involved here as well, being aware of any potential repercussions and issues in advance could help save you some valuable money.

It's time to categorise and prioritise. With any extensive job such as this there will be a list of different stages and you need to know which order you will use. If a renovation is going to be extensive you can expect a certain amount of disruption if you're going to continue living there whilst it's going on. You have to be able to plan your living requirements around the disruption that will take place, as well. And whilst you might well have your eye on a new bathroom and kitchen as your primary goals for restoration, you shouldn't overlook anything else that may need doing in and around the house, as when you're going through the planning, upheaval and disruption you really ought to cross all of these elements off the list for good measure.

It is important to thoroughly inspect your home at the beginning, often with the help of an expert who would be able to tell you what needs to be done. You should certainly make a list of everything, even if you don't commit to each and every element this time. Never underestimate the importance of this planning stage and you should ask all your friends and family what they think, to get as much input as possible. Sometimes we have a rather grandiose idea for a particular renovation which isn't necessarily feasible and/or practical for one reason or another. Now is the time to find that out.

Never make any assumptions and don't be afraid to get a second opinion if you're just not sure about a recommendation provided to you by a contractor. Independent inspection may not only be just required by a local authority for permitting purposes, but it might also represent a very good idea to make sure that things are proceeding nicely and "on track."

Keep in mind that it's never easy to completely vacate the home for a major restoration project, even though that would probably be an ideal scenario. Many of us need to live and operate out of the house whilst the project is going on and it's important to establish boundaries and strategies with the contractors ahead of time. This way you can keep the disruption to a minimum.

Even though it can be quite a challenge to prepare, plan, live through and even supervise a major undertaking such as this, it's well worthwhile when you're finally able to stand back and admire the finished product. At last, your home looks the way that you truly want it to!
