Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the Streamlined Citizenship Application Process for Members of the Military on January 15, 2010. Men and women who are serving in the armed forces of the United States will be honored by this policy. The citizenship process of the members will be updated and reformed by the Department of Homeland Security.
The Secretary proudly stated that national security has become stable due to the tireless efforts and sacrifices of the patriotic men and women in the armed forces. Accelerating the citizenship process for them would reveal the countrys acknowledgment and obligation to these people in service who have come from different parts of the world to serve the nation.
The time requirement to receive naturalization through military service for the applicants who served in time of peace was reduced from three years to one year according to the amended DHS regulations. The rule which conforms to the National Defense Authorization Act, 2004 also confers additional benefit on members of the Reserve of the Ready Reserve of the U.S. Armed Forces. Members can apply for citizenship without delay if they have served in active-duty status or in selected reserve of the Ready Reserve anytime from September 11, 2001.
While filling naturalization applications, the members of the armed forces need not file their biographic information forms (G-325B), eliminating administrative repetitions. Moreover, the rule helps in increasing the efficiency of the workers who risk sacrificing their lives while safeguarding the country. The USCIS along with the Department of Defense is working continuously to ensure that the U.S immigration services and benefits reach the members of the military and their family.
