Skating Motivation 101

What does it take to motivate a skater? You say you really want to try inline skating, you are determined to increase your current amount of skating time, or you have decided to become a better skater, but sometimes getting yourself to switch from heels to wheels is really a chore. If your skating motivation is fitness, other activities may sidetrack your skating time. If you're rolling for a social outlet, recreation or entertainment, it is easy to lose interest or find other outlets that may not be as healthy.

Here are a few suggestions that will help you stop procrastinating - so you can switch from zero to marathon skater or tackle that spring tour you have always wanted to skate.

Motivation #1: Keep Your Skates With You

It's hard to get started, so start by keeping your skates and gear with you whenever possible. Put them safely out of sight in your car to keep your equipment secure, and you will always be ready to roll if you find a nice, safe skating surface.

Motivation #2: Choose the Right Times to Skate

Find a convenient time to skate. Early in the day is always available for some skaters, but you should go for the time of day when your energy is highest and skating activities or locations are most accessible. Think about your other obligations, and then pick skating times that fit into your lifestyle.

Motivation #3: Find An Inline Skating Buddy

Many skaters are more motivated if they have a skating training buddy, significant skating other or belong to a regular skating group. I have driven to a skating rink in a blizzard to train with members of my skating club - and now many of my young students do the same.

They share common goals and encourage each other during the rough stretches of training.

Motivation #4: Make a List of Skating Goals

Make a list of realistic skating goals. Your goals are do-able if the things included on the list can be done with your body in its current fitness condition, using the skills you have and in the amount of time you have allowed. If your goals do not fit these requirements, set short term goals to acquire the skills or fitness level needed, and achieve them first. Then tackle the ultimate goals. Remember, if you know you are not able to manage the goals, you won't keep trying.

Motivation #5: Make a List of Your Achievements

Make a list of all of your past and recent inline skating accomplishments. Include everything - such as things you've done to get ready to skate, your first steps or classes and workshops. Keep your achievement list on hand and watch it grow as items from the goal list move to the list of things you have accomplished.
