- 1). Pull your hand back to your waist and flex it so that the heel of the palm juts outward. This is uncomfortable, so many advanced karateka prefer to keep the hand loose and then tighten it just as the palm strikes the target. Beginners are advised to set up the strike immediately. Speed and timing will come with practice.
- 2). Thrust your arm outward and snap your elbow as your palm strikes the target. Snapping the elbow adds power to the technique. This strike can be delivered with the fingers on top to the nose, chin or temple. It can also be delivered with the fingers on the bottom to the solar plexus, stomach or ribcage.
- 3). Use your fingers as an additional weapon while retracting the hand. For example, if you strike with the fingers on top to the nose, loosen your hand and drag your fingers down across your attacker's face as you pull the arm back. This turns the retraction of the palm-heel strike into its own weapon.
- 1). Open your hand holding your fingers tightly together and tucking your thumb underneath into your palm.
- 2). Straighten your arm and extend it behind your body with the palm facing downward.
- 3). Focus on your hand's edge, specifically the part where your index finger meets the top of the hand. This edge is your striking tool.
- 4). Swing your arm around your body in a discus-throwing motion. Twist your hip to add power to the strike. This technique is useful when attacking the eyes, nose and throat. It can also be used to attack lower targets such as the ribcage and the groin.
