- 1). Plan on each small flag needing 4 ft. by 3 ft. of material and each large flag needing 7 ft. by 3.5 ft.
- 2). Decide on how many small and large flags you need to have at present. Large flags weigh much more and require more muscle strength to move them well. Large flags get used less frequently than smaller flags. Determine if you need to make large flags at present or it can wait.
- 3). Add a color description to each theme or flag you want to create; for example fire flag is red and orange, and water flag is shimmery blue. Be as creative and descriptive as possible.
- 4). Count up the number of feet and convert it to yards. Fabric stores sell silk by the yard.
- 5). Create a budget. Expect to pay up to $21 per yard for good, quality silk.
- 6). Prioritize the flags you need to make according to how many yards of fabric you are able to purchase.
- 7). Shop at a local fabric store for the best silk-buying experience. When interested in a particular silk, pull the roll out and unwind it some. Place your hands behind the fabric and watch how it reflects light. Go with your gut instinct when filling the priority flag list.
- 8). Keep tabs on how much you are purchasing as the sales attendant is cutting fabric to make sure you have enough money to purchase all the different silks.
