Can You Save Seeds From Fortex Pole Beans?

    Fortex Pole Beans

    • Fortex pole beans, also known as French Filet beans, are one of many varieties of pole beans. Fortex are different from other pole beans in that they are stringless and they have extra long pods. They are easy to grow and are a favorite of home gardeners. Many consider them to be best when harvested while still relatively young and the pods are 7 to 8 inches long. More mature pods can grow to 10 inches; if left on the vine, the pods will dry out and make seeds. The seeds from these pods can can be saved.

    Safe storage

    • Fortex and all bean seeds are harvested when the pods are dry and the seeds rattle inside. If the pods have been on the vine in rain, make sure to use only those pods free of blemish, and check the seeds for a consistent glossy walnut brown color without any mold or mildew. Also make sure to wash your hands well after you've sorted out the healthy pods. This is infection control of the vegetable variety. Fortex pole bean seeds are best stored in a cold dark place, such as the refrigerator, in a breathable bag. Bean seeds will keep for two to three years. Fortex seeds do not need to be soaked before planting. Also do not overfertilize, or you'll end up with more leaves and fewer pods.

    Safe growing

    • Seeds can carry diseases from one season into the next. Fortex and other beans grown in areas with summer thunderstorms, cool autumn temperatures and rains and overhead irrigation are prone to infection. The bacteria that attack beans vary by geographic region, some areas have mold, rust and a variety of blight. Checking with your county extension service can help you determine whether you live in an area sensitive to bean diseases. See Resources to help you find your closest cooperative extension service. If you live in an area where beans are prone to bacterial infections of various kinds, buying seed packets of certified seeds grown in the arid regions of the western United States is a way to ensure a healthy crop.

    Storage tips

    • Bean seeds produce the same plant as the parent plant. If you are planning on saving seeds from a variety of beans, make sure you clearly label the seed packet with the variety and the date you began storage. Then, when you plant them, you will know that you are planting Fortex beans instead of Kentucky Wonder or Blue Lake.
