Definition:
In the game of Big Brother, the Head of Household (HoH) is the most important person in the house. The title changes hands from week to week, shifting the power between the houseguests and their alliances.
The HoH is determined by a competition, known as the HoH comp or Head of Household competition. These comptetitions are usually held on Thursdays, directly following the live eviction of one of the nominated houseguests.
The HoH comp can consist of:
- Trivia or question and answer challenges, usually based on the game itself
- Physical games such as mini-golf, skee-ball, or a variation on other traditional games
- Endurance competitions
Most of these challenges are designed to fit into the regular live episode, and a winner is handed the key to the Head of Household room immediately. Sometimes these competitions run longer than the episode, in endurance comps for example, and the winner is revealed during the following show.
Duties of the Head of Household
The winner of the HoH comp gets certain perks, including:
- His or her own private bedroom and bathroom
- A basket of goodies and a letter from home
- A CD and CD player to use for the week
- Exemption from any food restrictions
With power comes responsibility, and the Head of Household role is no exception. The HoH must nominate two houseguests for eviction and lead the nomination ceremony to identify those who have been nominated. The HoH also competes in the Power of Veto (PoV) competition.
If the Veto is won and used to remove a nominee from the eviction block, the Head of Household must name a replacement.
The HoH does not get a vote to evict unless the overall votes result in a tie. In that case, the Head of Household is the final vote to evict.
