9 Tips for Furniture That Grows With Your Children

1. Buy a convertible crib/toddler bed. This allows the same bed to be used with your child from infancy until they are school-aged. It also ensures that the same bed can be converted back if the child isn't ready to be put in a toddler bed. Convertible beds also save space when storing the child's bed for a possible future sibling, since only one piece has to be folded up and put away.
2. When buying a dresser for your nursery, buy one in a neutral color that can be used for the rest of the child's childhood.
3. If a changing table is needed, consider getting a changing table top that fits on top of a dresser. Then the top can be removed once the child is toilet trained and the dresser continues to be used. If you get a changing table, buy one that can continue to be used as shelving after the changing pad is removed. When a changing table on top of a dresser is removed, a hutch with shelving can be placed on top.
4. Decorate via wall hangings instead of mounted decorations. They can be replaced by posters as your child's tastes change.
5. Put in photo frames and simply change out pictures as your child ages.
6. If you choose to put cubbies in your child's room for storage, select cubby sizes near ground level that will fit an adult pair of shoes. This allows for cubbies to shift from toy holders to shoe holders on the bottom and personal storage up top as your child grows up.
7. Install shelving of a neutral color. Shelves should be placed at the lower and upper level reach of an adult. These shelves can hold lamps, glass picture frames, and decorative items young children shouldn't touch. When your child is old enough to reach them, they are mature enough to select what to store there.
8. Furniture that grows with your children is perfect for passing down in the family, since it can be used for years with the same family member. With this in mind, buy furniture that is made from solid wood instead of particle board and quality craftsmanship so that it can survive use and abuse by multiple children.
9. Instead of buying a child sized chair that the child can outgrow, buy ottomans or bean bag chairs. Bean bags can never be outgrown. Ottomans that a child sat upon can later be used as a foot rest.
