Wear Organic Cotton Clothing and Save The Environment

Recently, an upsurge has been observed in the demand of organic cotton clothing all over the world.
But considering the overall production of cotton and cotton yarn, this shift is too small for the environmentalists to rejoice.
To somebody uninitiated, it's important to first understand why organic cotton is better than ordinary cotton for the health of people and planet before they can appreciate the increase in organic cotton demand.
Cotton is one of those crops that are most vulnerable to insects and pests so cotton growers use huge quantities of insecticides and pesticides to protect it.
About 25%of world's insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides which also includes herbicides and defoliants is used by cotton.
Out of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton, at least 7 were considered to be "possible, likely, probable or known human carcinogens by The Environment Protection Agency in 2000 in USA.
These seven pesticides are acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin.
Just to give you an idea of how poisonous these pesticides can be and what they do to us and our planet, let me cite you an incident.
In 1999, few workers re-entered a cotton field around five hours after it was treated with tribufos and sodium chlorate.
Seven people had to seek medical treatment immediately afterwards and five out of them had to undergo long term health problems.
They were supposed to stay away for 24 hours.
To produce enough cotton to make just one t-shirt, 1/3lb of pesticide and fertilizers are used.
Rest I would leave to your imagination.
We should opt for organic cotton because it guards the health of planet and its inhabitants by reducing the exposure to fatal chemicals of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that enter the food chain through ground, air and water.
The resulting health problems can range from asthma to cancer.
As organically grown cotton is free from toxins and persistent pesticides and choosing it is the simplest way to protect yourself and your surroundings.
Organically cultivated cotton presses benign insects and biological and cultural practises into action to manage pests and build strong soil.
Organic farming is an attempt to counter the problems linked with pesticides like reduced fertility of soil, frequent water pollution, reduced biodiversity in the surroundings and livestock and wild animal poisoning.
Organic farming needs our support to make it a success.
Go for organic, save the planet!
