Creative Party Theme Ideas for Church

Church parties can provide enjoyable fellowship and entertainment. When planning a church party, however, it can be difficult to find a theme that everyone can get involved in. Before moving too far in the planning process, consider the average age group of those who will attend the party, as well as the occasion for the party--this will make it easier to plan your event.

Bible Character Party

Throwing a Bible character party is a suitable idea for many occasions. Dressing up as characters from Scripture is a good way to celebrate reading through the New Testament. This idea also can be used to provide a Halloween alternative for children or to encourage an evening with fellow Christians. Have each individual dress as a specific character from the Bible--guests can come dressed as such individuals as Abraham, Moses or King David with a robe and a staff; as Jonah, perhaps with tattered clothing and a toy fish attached to his clothing; or Lazarus, wrapped with strips of linen like a mummy. Plan the party food based on Biblical ideas. Serve breads, fruits and meats inspired by Scriptural meals. Although this might go over best with children, people of all ages could participate in this party.

Center the party around a Christmas theme. Have individuals obtain or create their own decorative Christmas hat; announce that a prize will be awarded to the most creative hat. When everyone arrives, play Christmas-themed games. Guests can play song charades, using a wide selection of songs. Write the names of popular Christmas songs on small slips of paper, and place all the pieces of paper into a Santa hat. Divide the group into two teams, and have everyone sit in a circle. Pass the bag to a person on the first team. That person must draw a slip of paper and act out the Christmas song listed on the paper without talking until someone guesses the name of the song. Serve Christmas-themed foods, such as tree-shaped desserts and candy cane-shaped appetizers. Before you eat, have everyone share a reason why Jesus' birth has made a difference.

For a summer children's program kick-off, a construction party can be a fun event. Before the party, assemble plastic hard hats, such as those used by construction workers. Decorate the area where you will hold the party; make it look like a construction zone. Use such decorations as caution tape, pieces of scaffolding and orange construction barrels. When the children arrive, give them each a construction hat. Explain that during the summer, they will be exploring how to build their lives on the rock; share the story of the Wise and Foolish Builders from Matthew 7:24-27. Spend the rest of the time playing construction-themed games, such as a version of "pin the tail on the donkey," using caution tape as the tail. Play ring toss with rings and large orange construction cones. Prepare construction-themed foods, such as a "Dynamite Punch." Prepare a normal fruit punch, then add a few Pop Rock candies to each drink before handing them out. This will make the beverage crackle and pop.
