How to Prune Angel Trumpets

    • 1). Identify whether the angel trumpet has begun to "y". This means that you will see a visible "y" shape where the stem has grown off in opposite directions. Do not prune angel trumpet plants that have not yet grown into a "y" shape.

    • 2). Cut off old growth, not new growth. Old growth is a dull color, not a vibrant green like newer growth is. Prune off the old growth after flowering to promote new shoots.

    • 3). Prune by cutting stalks as close to the base of the plant as possible without cutting into to the center bulb of the plant.

    • 4). Prune braided stems by removing the leaves rather than the stems themselves. Braided-stemmed plants are plants in which two to three stems have been braided together to form a single stem.

    • 5). Prune angel trumpet roots to promote new growth. To do this, remove the plant from the container or ground and prune off the smaller outermost roots. Do not prune large roots as these are the feeder roots that the plant needs to survive.
