- 1). Choose the site for your dog run. Any dog kennel should include both shelter and room for the dog to move around freely. Choose a spot that has access to sun and shade, and preferably is sheltered from wind by trees or nearby structures.
- 2). Mix concrete per instructions on the bag. Pour slab of concrete for the base of the run at least 13 feet by 8 feet, and at least 4 inches thick, for a small dog run. Rough up the concrete with a broom, then allow it to cure for at least 24 hours. Enlarge the run area as desired.
- 3). Purchase a kennel kit from a pet store or online retailer. Purchasing a kit will be both easier and less expensive than buying materials separately. Buy a kit that is large enough for the dog you're housing, and keep in mind that if you want a larger run you might need to supplement the kit with additional fencing.
- 4). Follow the directions on your kennel kit for building the kennel and run. Each kit will come with materials and a list of tools. Use these to secure the back to one side of the kennel and stand it up. Move on to securing the other side, the front and eventually the roof of the kennel. Always follow manufacturer directions to ensure a secure construction.
- 5). Add a pre-made doghouse for additional shelter within the run. Again, purchasing a doghouse will be both less expensive and more efficient than attempting to build your own. Also add food, water, blankets, toys, etc.
