- Track spikes can have positive effects for runners.track spikes image by jimcox40 from Fotolia.com
For those who run sprints--and for some cross-country runners--the question of whether or not to wear spikes will always come up. Although spikes are not necessary for young runners (middle school and younger), high school and college students should consider wearing spikes for their added benefits. - The most important thing that track spikes do is provide better traction to the runner. The spikes dig into the track, offering better grip and stability. Since you have better traction, your sprint time may decrease slightly--which can be the difference between second and first place. They especially come in handy on days when it's wet and/or raining outside, making you less prone to slipping. Although running spikes are mostly seen on sprinters, cross-country runners (along with football players, soccer players, golfers and baseball players) will also benefit from wearing them. These athletes perform on a different terrain--mostly grass--into which the spikes dig, giving them better traction and possibly a quicker running time.
- Running spikes have become a part of track like the Speedo Fastskin LZR Racer swimsuit has become a part of swimming. If everyone in the competition is wearing track spikes, you handicap yourself by not wearing them. Staying with--or above--the competition is very important in sports and is the only way to achieve success.
- One of the best things about running spikes is that they are removable and replaceable. Instead of spending a lot of money each year on a new pair of running shoes, invest in one great pair and simply change your spikes when needed. The spikes screw in and out of the shoe, making them easy to use and change. Always carry an extra bag of spikes with you so that if one snaps, you can exchange the broken spike with a new one.
