When I first started using Linux, I thought that aside from being virus-free, there was nothing spectacular about it.
It was a great alternative to Windows, and even Mac, as you can do a lot of basic computing tasks on it.
But as I fiddled around, I discovered some powerful features that you won't find in other operating systems.
1.
Manage Files in Different File Systems I have a number of partitions in my hard drive but when I want to manage files under different partitions, I always use Linux as it can read Windows file systems like FAT, FAT32 and NTFS.
Although you can manage partitions in Windows, you will need a third party application to see your files under ext3 and ext4 file system.
If you're not careful, you may accidentally delete these partitions as Windows' Disk Management tool shows this partition as an unidentified file system.
Mac's HFS and HFS Plus can also be read in Linux.
2.
One-Click Update Tired of updating all your Windows programs one by one? Linux has a simple solution using an update manager that updates all your programs in just one click.
With Linux, you can spend more time with your computing tasks and less on computer maintenance.
3.
Secure Kernel Update Kernel updates are important in that it affects the core of the operating system.
When making such updates, Linux still preserves the old version of the kernel.
The reason is that when the kernel is faulty, say you are updating and you accidentally cut the power off, your computer may no longer boot.
When this happens, you can simply boot under your old kernel and continue updating it to the latest version.
4.
Add More Eye Candy Using Compiz Fusion and Other Tools Linux may not look very pretty on first use but wait until you install programs that will add gorgeous eye candies and animations.
Compiz Fusion is one such program that includes so many features such as the Desktop Cube that allows you to manage multiple workspaces in a nice cube.
Want to make your desktop look like Mac? There's an application called Mac4Lin to help you achieve that.
5.
Free 2GB Cloud Storage With Ubuntu One If you choose the Ubuntu distribution, you get a free 2GB Cloud storage that allows you to access your files everywhere, even on a non-Ubuntu computer.
Also, when you buy music at Ubuntu One music store, it is automatically synced into your Ubuntu One account.
