New York Therapists Guide

Sitting on the couch one morning over a cup of coffee, you review the last few weeks of your life and decide that it isn't what you want. The people involved in your life are good people, you love them, but you are not satisfied with the way things are going.

You have tried to bring the subject up with your spouse. He or she has asked what it is that you want, but you are unable to answer the question for them or even for yourself. Nothing is solved and the same life continues. That morning on the couch you decide you need to help, but who do you go to?

New York therapists can be found in many different areas. Community mental health centers, hospitals and human service agencies to name a few. Most schools and universities have counseling services to help their students who may be having difficulties at work and home, or are dealing with a stressful work load.

If you are the person above, a therapist that does counseling at your educational institute may be the wisest place for you to start. The surroundings are at least familiar to you, you might have heard good things about the counselor from associates and you already know the hours that they keep.

Getting an appointment with them may fit into your schedule. You may find the same kind of help if you work in a large business. If neither of these places fit your life, you might try any of the many human service agencies that will most often provide you with short-term care until you can find another counselor, or until such time as they locate one for you.

Another place that you might investigate is community mental health services. The psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists that work there are usually on salaries, which means that the health facility more than likely will staff these professionals on holidays and weekends.

Yet another source of help is the yellow page directory in your area. You will find many professionals in the yellow pages, but you might find that they are too expensive for you to afford.

If someone is willing to help you with the expenses involved, you might consider that you will be seeing someone who is in private practice and more than likely has a lot of experience.

Now that you have found places where you can get help for your difficulties, you will now probably be wondering about what kind of professional can best treat you. In the beginning the degree that a therapist holds is not that important.

What you need is the first consultation in order to find more information. If you will need medication, any of the therapists that you see will refer you to a psychiatrist who will give you a prescription for whatever he or she feels you will need.

In many cases, New York therapists work with a particular psychiatrist for these very reasons. You may decide after your first consultation that you do not like the specific therapist you are seeing. If you wish to find another therapist that suits you better, whether it is because of gender, nationality or religious views, you will not be hurting the therapist's feelings.

The problem is yours and you need to make sure that you are getting what is important to you. You may seek out several interviews or consultations with different New York therapists until you find one that you are comfortable with. Most first visits will be a discussion on what your issues are, what treatments are best and what results you are looking for.

You also need to be listening and observing your therapist and asking yourself some questions, such as: Do they seem to have a personal warmth? Do you feel that they are showing you proper sincerity and concern? Do you feel comfortable with them and so find conversing easy? New York therapists that show confidence and self-assurance are important to your therapy because it shows competency.

Once you have decided that you have the right New York therapist, you need to examine your self. Therapy does not create miracles and it takes time and energy on your part. Making life changes is not easy. Most forms of behavior are habits that are difficult to get out of. You need to face the truth about yourself.

Most people will admit that they aren't perfect. Recognizing unpleasant things about your self is not a good time for most of us. The point is that until you recognize them you can't change them. Many New York therapists will tell you, after they have worked with you a few times, how many visits are on average needed to complete therapy for someone with your issues.

This, however, does vary from one individual to the next. You are not there to try and make the book of world records by walking out of the office after the first few sessions a new person. It takes some time and dedication on your part. The New York therapist is there for you and you need to give them your cooperation so they can help you.
