- 1). Make sure the trimmer is off and the engine is cool before trying to remove the spool line. Turn the trimmer so the head is up and the engine is on the ground.
- 2). Hold the outer rim in place while turning the center knob. Turn the knob in the direction of the arrow on the spool retainer. Pull off the spool retainer.
- 3). Remove the spool line from the spool retainer. Remove the spring from the spool line. Take off any old string and check for damages on the spring, spool line and spool retainer. Replace them if they're heavily worn, cracked or bent.
- 4). Insert the spring into the spool line. Make sure the spring is properly set and hold it in place.
- 5). Wind the string around the spool line. Use even rows and layers that don't cross over one another. Stick the remaining string ends through the eyelets on the spool retainer.
- 6). Push the spring and spool line back into the spool retainer. Secure them in place by reinstalling and turning the knob in the opposite direction.
