Moral of the story: fast doesn't have to mean brutal
Perhaps the biggest shock of my few laps aboard the 1125R race bike was its tractability and ease of operation. I expected a brutish experience, but because this machine is tailor made for the track, it’s also most comfortable there, exhibiting the utmost confidence as it whips itself around Road America’s 14 turns.I only put in four laps on this race-ready bike, but each go-round lent me an increasingly secure feeling about what the bike was doing, where its limits were, and how far I could push it.
Production bikes produce outrageous amounts of horsepower, handling, and braking for the road, but a spin on a race bike reveals that there’s yet another layer of performance lurking in all that exotic hardware. There’s no way to fully extract a race-bred sportbike’s capabilities on public roads without becoming a menace to yourself and fellow motorists. But when exploiting a race bike in its native habitat, you get a glimpse of the impressive feats these highly tuned machines are capable of.
