Sedation Dentistry Relieves Patient Anxiety

For patients who cannot face the dentist without fear sedation dentistry offers a way out.

Dental anxiety costs some people their oral health. This fear of anything related to the dentist - the office, the dentist's chair, the tools - all make it difficult for some people to get the treatments they need. Even regular check-ups can be hard to face. Such fear may stem from high sensitivity to pain in general, genetic issues, bad experiences in the past, or from a fear of close contact. The anxiety ranges from mild to severe. How can such a patient maintain good oral health? The answer is sedation dentistry.

Whatever the level of anxiety of a patient, sedation can help. Many dentists now offer this option to put their patients at ease. Even if you do not suffer from anxiety, you can still benefit from sedation. For instance, if you are going to be wearing metal braces and need to have two tooth extractions, you need not come on two separate days. You can get both extractions done at the same visit with the help of sedatives. They allow you to feel less discomfort during and a short while after the procedure.

Some patients are unable to get even the most basic treatments due to anxiety. They keep putting off appointments and cancelling them at the last minute or postponing important procedures until it's too late. Sedation is very safe in the hands of a qualified and experienced dentist. There is no need to worry about side effects. Dentists administer sedation based on several criteria - the patient's age, general health, and the nature of the treatment sought. Depending on these variables, sedation will be administered orally or intravenously (IV sedation). Some Corona CA dentists also offer nitrous dioxide (laughing gas) to relax the patient.

For patients with mild anxiety, oral sedation is very effective. You will need to swallow a pill about one hour before the procedure. It will relax you. You will be aware of what is going on around you, but the fear and discomfort will melt away. Patients who take oral sedation cannot drive themselves back home, as the effects of the drug will wear off slowly. Those experiencing moderate to severe anxiety may require IV sedation. Once you come for the treatment, the dentist will administer the drug and you will effectively be asleep during the procedure. Patients that wake up afterwards will still be groggy and disoriented and therefore need to be driven home by a family member.
