- 1). Place the wheel of the edger on the driveway or sidewalk and place the blade onto your lawn, just beside where the concrete or pavement meets the grass.
- 2). Apply pressure downward and move the edger back and forth to begin edging the lawn. If using a power edger, turn on the edger and squeeze the trigger to rotate the blade, being careful not to allow the blade to contact the driveway or sidewalk.
- 3). Gradually move down the sidewalk or driveway while moving the edger back and forth to continue edging the lawn.
- 1). Turn the string trimmer upside down so that the plastic guard protects you from flying debris. The string should spin vertically, rather than horizontally.
- 2). Stand on the sidewalk if you would like a straight edge, or stand in the grass for a beveled edge on your lawn.
- 3). Turn on the trimmer, then pull the trigger and place the spinning string at the location where you would like to create an edge.
- 4). Allow the string to penetrate the ground approximate 1 inch. If your trimmer has a metal edging stand on the end, rest the trimmer on the stand to ensure that you do not trim too deeply. If you are looking for a beveled edge, tilt the edger slightly toward you to create a slanted edge.
- 5). Slowly walk down the edge of the yard while holding the trigger to continue edging.
