During the winter months, we tend to move away from the light and tangy foods of summer and move toward eating richer foods.
As the days shorten, it seems we all crave the palate depth of the heavier meal.
In this great little dessert, you still get some of that summer tang with the apples and cranberries and still have a substantial side dish for even the best meats.
Be sure to watch this dessert in the last hour or so as even the best crockpot can burn light fruits such as apples.
Cranberries and Apples Side Superb 6 or 7 large apples, such as Granny Smith apples.
3/4 cup of fresh cranberries 1/2 cup of raisins 2 tablespoon cinnamon (or even more) 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3/4 cup of white sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar Apple Juice (optional) Peel, core and slice the apples.
Toss all the ingredients into the crock pot, stir like crazy, and cook all day (6 hours) on low.
Apples really shrink down when cooked in the crock pot, so cram in a whole bunch of fruit if you are feeling a special need to have your apple that will keep the doctor away for some time.
Check in and visit with your apples in the last hour, they could overcook and maybe burn.
You may or may not want to add some apple juice to change the texture of this finished dish.
