- Know the state for which you are pursuing your accounting dream, as each state's requirements differ. Most states require 24 accounting credit hours and 24 to 30 general business hours. Some states, like Nebraska, require 30 accounting hours and 36 general business hours.
- Gateway classes such as Intro to Financial Accounting and Intro to Managerial Accounting are core requirements. These principles do not count, however, toward your accounting credits but they do count toward your general business credits.
- This major requires a heavy dose of financial accounting. Whether you major or minor in accounting, you will be required to take two intermediate financial courses. One advanced financial course is highly encouraged.
- Advanced courses offer you an advantage after graduation. You can select the courses you wish to take, but you should take at least three advanced courses including auditing, an advanced financial course and government issues.
- Aside from accounting credits, you'll need to fulfill general business obligations. These courses canvas all business disciplines and include management, managerial communications, statistics, marketing, finance, banking, law and ethics.
- Once all general business requirements are completed, you are required to take a Capstone course. The Capstone applies everything you have learned in all classes.
- The goal of this curriculum is to prepare you to take the CPA exam. Regardless of the state, to sit for the CPA exam you must complete a minimum of 150 total hours. The exam consists of four tests: Financial accounting, auditing, regulation, and a combination of information systems and management.
