- 1). Select a new location that receives full sun exposure and has well-drained fertile soil.
- 2). Water the silk tree thoroughly for two to three days before transplanting it. The soil must be moist when the tree is removed from its old location.
- 3). Dig a trench 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide around the silk tree. The trench should be large enough for you to remove the tree's entire root-ball.
- 4). Lift the silk tree carefully out of the ground and wrap the root-ball in damp burlap. Carry the tree to its new location by its root-ball, not its trunk.
- 5). In the new location dig a hole three times the size of the root-ball.
- 6). After discarding the burlap, plant the tree in its new hole. Backfill the area around the root-ball and the base of the trunk with soil. Tamp the soil down firmly.
- 7). Water the silk tree thoroughly after you first transplant it and at least every 10 to 14 days thereafter. The soil surrounding the tree needs to remain moist. During periods of drought or if you live in a drier climate, a recently transplanted silk tree will require more frequent watering.
