Different Uses For a Metal Band Saw

A metal band saw is used for cutting metal material.
They are used on farms for cutting metal used to make pins for animals, or silos to hold grain and multiple other uses.
They are obviously used in metal working shops on a daily basis.
They are used for many purposes.
In this article we will look at a few of the more specific uses for the different types of saw blades.
The first on is the circular knife blade.
These are used to cut fiber glass, rubber and aluminum.
They are hand held and the circular blade will spin very quickly, so be sure you have a firm grip on it before turning on the power.
Carbide tipped saw blades are used for cutting extrusions, solids and plates to 20 RMS finish or better.
These blades also cut aluminum, brass, copper and bronze.
Solid high speed steel saw blades are used for very ferrous applications.
They will cut extrusions, thin wall tubing, bar stock, angel iron and flat bar Friction and hot saw blades are used for angle cuts, fabrication, structural, decking and cutting steel tubes.
Segmented cold saw blades will cut structural tube, fabrication for billets, aluminum, brass and copper.
You can use a diamond blade to cut through glass.
Most of the different blades will come in 1/8th inch blades to 3/4 inch.
Thin, flexible blades are used for cutting rounded or curved material, while wide blades are used for cutting straight lines.
If you use the proper blade for each cutting job, you will not only get better results you will be able to preserve the blades for your band saw longer.
If you do not use the proper blade when cutting material, you will do more damage to the blade causing it to wear out much sooner.
When blades are new, they are especially sharp so avoid rigorous action in the beginning.
You should probably reduce the speed of the saw by about 50% with a new blade until you break it in a little bit.
When you are finished using the band saw, don't leave the blade on the saw.
During use the blade and saw heat up.
This causes the blade to stretch a little.
When it cools down it will shrink just a little.
If you leave it on the saw with tension on it, this cooling process can cause the blade to crack.
Keeping the blades lubricated is a must.
Never use water or a cleaning agent on the blades because these can cause them to rust quickly.
The best cleaning solution is a mixture of 2/3's high adhesion chain saw bar oil and 1/3 kerosene.
Apply this to both sides of the blade.
Keeping the blades lubricated will make them wear less and last a lot longer.
It also is a good idea to store them so that they are not scratched or bent while not being used.
Just basic common sense will usually be your best guide.
