- 1). Separate envelopes by color or size.
- 2). Select the envelope that will fit inside the filing cabinet or storage box.
- 3). Label each envelope with a description that lists what documents are in the envelope.
- 4). File the envelope in alphabetical or numerical order. Numerical order works best if you decide to number documents using account numbers or dates.
- 5). Create a filing system that allows for additional envelopes. If you expect more receipts or documents, the envelope filing cabinet will need space for future filing.
