- 1). Familiarize yourself with your local weather patterns. Valerian should be germinated and transplanted to the garden after the final frost of the season. The germination process should begin approximately three months prior to permanent plant transplant--in most regions, December or January.
- 2). Fill 2-inch pots with rich potting soil. One seed should be placed per pot.
- 3). Plant seeds just under the surface of the soil, approximately 1/2 inch or less.
- 4). Place the pots indoors at temperatures between 55 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep pots uncovered and near a natural source of light.
- 5). Wait two to three weeks for seeds to begin sprouting. Monitor the soil regularly, watering as needed to keep it moist.
- 6). Transplant valerian plants to the garden when two sets of leaves have begun to grow. Valerian should be planted 2 to 3 feet apart in full to partial sunlight.
