- 1). Identify the best branch before you begin. An ideal branch will be long enough that the swing can hang 3 feet out from the trunk (so you don't hit it) and is at least 8 feet thick so it supports your weight.
- 2). Rig your ladder so that you can reach the branch and get someone to spot you, especially if your tree is on sloping ground.
- 3). Using a drill, bore through the branch at an angle perpendicular to the ground, so that you have a long shaft running through the entire branch.
- 4). Insert the bolt through the hole so that the eye is on the bottom of the tree limb. Place the washer on the top part of the bolt, followed by the nuts, and tighten both nuts to secure.
- 5). Thread the rope attached to the swing through the eye on the bolt and tie. Good knots to use are barrel knots or bowline hitches, since these will not loosen.
