- 1). Mow your yard often to gradually reduce the amount of thistle found in your yard. Mow while the thistle plants are in an early stage and haven't yet produced flowers. Cut the thistle plants as close to the ground as possible when mowing.
- 2). Cut thistle plants close to the ground with a weed whacker or edger to prevent the thistle plants from regrowing.
- 3). Plow dirt areas, such as garden beds, where thistle grows. Continue to plow the soil before the thistle gets to be 3 inches tall, and it will eventually stop growing at its current rate.
- 4). Apply an herbicide that contains clopyralid, dicamba, bentazon or glyphosate to ensure that regrowth won't occur. Spray the herbicide on the thistle during the spring when it begins to grow, then remove all of the dead thistle after a few weeks.
