- 1). Satisfy the basic requirements to apply for the agent trainee position. Those requirements, according to the TABC, include being at least 21 years old, having a high school diploma or equivalent, holding Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) certification, and having four years of law enforcement experience, preferably in investigations. Alternative qualification methods include graduating from an accredited four-year college or completing four years of military service and being willing to obtain TCLEOSE Basic Peace Officer certification. TCLEOSE certification requires meeting minimum standards, completing a certification program consisting of more than 600 hours of training and passing a peace officer licensing examination.
- 2). Complete the TABC state application for agent employment, a pre-employment inquiry waiver and a supplemental form, all of which are available on the the TABC website. Resumes will not be accepted in place of the application, but can be submitted to provide additional information. Consider the application a chance to make a positive first impression, states the TABC.

Meet physical standards and have no physical disabilities that would interfere with your duties. You should be able to complete the following exercises: 20 situps in 39 seconds, 300-meter run in 93 seconds, 13 pushups (no time limit), 1.5-mile run in 21:55 minutes. You must have acceptable vision (not worse than 20/200 uncorrected or 20/30 corrected and no color blindness). - 4). Undergo a selection process. That includes the application screening, a standard aptitude test, appearing before an oral interview board, and a background check of finalists that includes reviewing your credit history, character and driving record and verifying your past employment.
- 5). Meet all the minimum requirements and submit all the proper documentation to be considered for the position. If you are chosen for an interview, you will be notified by the Human Resources Division. Only interviewed candidates are notified whether they have been selected.
- 6). Become an agent trainee. After being hired and successfully completing a 12-month probation period, you are reclassified as an agent I. Over the course of 20 years, an agent can advance to the rank of senior agent. Ranks such as sergeant, lieutenant and captain are also available.
