- 1). Select a kind of paper to use for your bookmarks. Look for heavier weight paper such as cardstock for greater durability. Or, if you want to decorate the bookmark with watercolors, use watercolor paper. Select light-colored paper if you want to decorate the bookmark with markers or colored pencils.
- 2). Use a ruler and pencil to trace the outline of a bookmark onto the paper.
- 3). Use scissors or a paper cutter to cut out the bookmark.
- 4). Decorate the bookmark with watercolors, markers, colored pencils, pens or other materials. You could also create a collage on the bookmark using your own photographs or images from magazines.
- 5). Let watercolor paint or marker ink dry.
- 6). Punch a hole in the top of the bookmark and string a piece of pretty ribbon through the hole. Tie a knot close to the hole to secure the ribbon in place.
