War Horse is a thrilling and spectacular stage play adapted by Nick Stafford from the bestselling 1982 book written by Michael Morpurgo the much acclaimed children's writer,author, poet and playwright.
The story starts at the outbreak of World War One Albert's much loved horse Joey is sold into the army to become a cavalry horse and is duly shipped to France. Joey is soon in the thick of the action, after being captured by the Germans he ends up wounded and wandering in no man's land. Albert although under age decides to enlist at the age of 16 to find his beloved horse and bring him home.
The production has been met with critical acclaim, the use of life size horse puppets won an Olivier Award, London Critics' Circle Theatre Award and Evening Standard Theatre Award for their design. The horse puppets are operated by three actors from the Handspring Puppet Company one on the outside operating the head and two on the inside of the puppet, and they are truly believable as horses as they neigh and rear.
Making a rare personal visit to the theatre Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip attended the 12th October 2009 performance, their first such visit in over four years.
Steven Spielberg has bought the film rights and is currently filming on location in the United Kingdom. And is intended for release in August 2011, the cast announced so far include David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, and David Kross
