Diversifying Your Investment Portfolio with Coloured Diamonds

Investing in diamonds can sometimes be a tricky area. You need to have a decent level of knowledge when it comes to sourcing the best diamonds, working out their value, and understanding how to successfully build your portfolio. Those of you who have been actively engaging with diamond investment will have your own methods; passing on advice and stories about your successes. However, for those just starting out, you might want to know how you can diversify your portfolio. The following article will reveal how you can achieve this and what coloured diamonds can offer you.

Diamonds can either be colourless or coloured, but with coloured diamonds there are many different variations. These variations and subtle differences can have a direct impact on the price of the diamond. In most locations around the world it is these types of diamonds that have become harder to get hold of due to the fact that a number of the world's largest mines have closed. Obviously, any diamond that can offer you great financial return is worth looking into, although it's worth bearing in mind that the high end coloured types will be the most rewarding, despite their huge costs to secure them.

Professional investors are a good and sensible place to start when you are beginning your investment journey. They can help you with your investment options and build your portfolio. In addition, they will also work out the best diamonds for you to invest in given your current budget. A quick search online will present you with a few options, so it's worth calling some of the companies or going to see them face-to-face to establish if they can offer you anything. The main benefit is that they have in-depth knowledge and contacts in the industry, so it could be worth your time using their services.

If you are going to start investing in diamonds then there are a few factors that you need to understand. The value of a diamond is determined by what's referred to as the 4 C's which include colour, cut, clarity and carat, although arguably, it's colour that is the most important factor and one that should be considered first. The colour is formed by pressure in the rocks from certain chemical elements. For example, nitrogen and hydrogen will give the stone a different colour.

There are also different intensities too, ranging from Faint, through to Fancy. Red diamonds are very rare to come across, so a red Fancy Vivid diamond would be worth a substantial amount of money. Keep an eye out for diamonds that display clear colours as these will be expensive, and see if you can learn which colours will be more worthwhile to you depending on your budget limitations.

The more diamonds that you have available, the more interest you might generate for your own portfolio if you decide that you want to sell your assets further down the line. You might not want to sell and this is fine, as people have different reasons for entering the investment market, but if you do wish to sell, then coloured diamonds, alongside clear diamonds, will make for a nice variation should you attract any potential investors.

Obviously, it's up to you what you do with your investment, although it's always worth keeping an eye out for any diamonds that come onto the market. If you know what to look out for, you might come across a diamond of real worth for a decent price. This will give you more room to develop your portfolio whilst building an awareness and greater interest in your assets.
