Dodge built the diesel-powered 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 to tractor-trailer-rig specifications to give the pickup's engine a lifespan of about 350,000 miles before its first overhaul. Cummins Inc. manufactures diesels for clients worldwide, including marine, stationary and big-rig powerplants. By utilizing big-rig specifications, service intervals are longer than standard light-duty trucks' diesel engines. Dodge also built the frame and body to accommodate the stress of a large engine. - The Dodge Ram 2500 HD's Cummins turbocharged, 6.7-liter, in-line six-cylinder diesel engine is larger than the 2008 Ford F-250's 6.4-liter V8 and General Motors' 6.6-liter Duramax V8. The Cummins engine generates 350 horsepower and 650 ft.-lb. of torque, which is the twisting force to give the truck towing power and acceleration, especially on steep inclines. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission complements the engine. The turbocharged engine employs an exhaust brake commonly found on tractor-trailer rigs to accommodate heavier loads and allow more controlled braking, particularly while traveling downhill. The exhaust brake also saves wear and tear on the normal brakes.
- The Cummins-powered truck, without a load, can reach zero to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds. The high torque output allows the truck to have a payload capacity of 5,130 lb. and a towing capacity of 16,850 lb. The engine requires servicing every 7,500 miles. The engine's lifespan is about 350,000 miles, while a standard pickup with a gasoline-powered engine generally has a 200,000-mile lifespan. Dodge designed the six-speed automatic to anticipate shifting torque with an empty cargo box as well as heavy loads. A manual switch allows the driver to shift into manual mode to override the transmission.
- The 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 HD diesel's curbside weight ranges from 6,100 to 6,600 lb., depending on the type of cabin. It comes in rear- and four-wheel drive. The cabin configurations are regular, extended and four-door crew cabs. The wheelbase ranges from 140.5 to 160.5 inches, depending on the size of the cab and cargo box. Its length ranges from 227.7 to 249.7 inches.
- The 6.7-liter diesel was an option in 2008. The standard engine for the 2008 Dodge Ram was the 5.7-liter gasoline-powered V8. The 6.7-liter diesel cost buyers an extra $495, although the exhaust brake was available at no extra charge. The diesel came with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
