- 1). Disconnect the amplifier from the main power supply. Flip the power switch on and off several times to drain any residual charge left in the amplifier's internal capacitors. Remove the screws securing the "circuit bay" at the top of the amplifier. Remove the outer cover.
- 2). Locate the output transformer inside the amplifier's electronics. An easy way is often to trace the wires from the speaker back inside the circuit bay to the large, bulky box, usually covered with heat-dispersing fins. Remove the mounting screws holding the transformer onto the board.
- 3). Cut away the wires attached to the transformer. They're hard-wired inside for safety, so they'll need to be cut. Make the cut very close to the transformer case, ensuring that there is adequate wire left over to attach the new transformer.
- 4). Strip around two centimeters (about 8/10-inch) of outer insulation off the two wires previously connected to the output transformer. Remove the base of the new transformer, exposing the contacts. Heat the soldering iron, and solder the two wires to the contacts, red to positive, black to negative.
- 5). Replace the lid on the transformer case, and screw the new transformer unit to the circuit bay, just as the old one was attached. Replace the cover and the screws holding it in place. Test the amplifier.
